TEACHING PHILOSOPHY OVERVIEW
As a teacher I strive not only to help my students become the best flute players they can be, but through studying music, become even better and more complete people.
Whether you are drawn to the flute as a hobby, an outlet for expression, or as a potential career, the skills you develop will enrich your life in every facet. Playing music requires perseverance, dedication, self analysis, critical thinking, and above all courage of conviction. Believe it or not, everything you learn in your flute lesson has an even wider application no matter where life takes you.
PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS
Lessons vary widely depending on the level of the student. That being said, all lessons will include an initial focus on sound, followed by work on technical aspects: scales, finger drills, embouchure flexibility, breath control, etc. I believe strongly in a regular practice routine but one that cycles through variations each day. The same way athletes cross train to develop all areas of the body, my students work through varying practicing routines to strengthen all areas of their flute-playing and music-making.
Students will be coached to practice with a clear focus so as to maximize their productivity. I disagree with the notion that more hours of practice equals a better player. If your mind is not fully engaged, repetition will not result in significant improvement. Though I have heard the saying"practice makes perfect," I feel it should be amended to "practice makes permanent." Mindfulness of your work determines quality.
